Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction
Every adult person has the potential to develop four wisdom teeth, which are permanent adult teeth. These are located in the back corners of the mouth, both on the top and the bottom. The extraction of these teeth is known as wisdom tooth extraction, a common surgical procedure performed by dentists or oral surgeons.
Sometimes, when a wisdom tooth doesn’t have enough space to grow properly, it can cause pain or discomfort. It may also lead to infection or other dental problems. In such cases, a dentist or oral surgeon may recommend wisdom tooth extraction.
At K Family Dental, our team can assess your wisdom teeth and provide advice on whether extraction is necessary. If needed, we can perform the procedure to help address any existing or potential dental concerns.

Why do people get their wisdom tooth extracted?
Remain entirely beneath the gums: When wisdom teeth fail to grow in their normal position, they may become trapped within the jawbone, a condition referred to as impacted wisdom teeth. This can sometimes result in infections or the development of a cyst, which may harm nearby tooth roots or the jawbone’s structure.
Partially erupt through the gums: Since the rear of the mouth is difficult to reach and clean effectively, partially erupted wisdom teeth can create openings for bacteria to enter the gums. This increases the risk of gum infections and disease. Additionally, partially erupted wisdom teeth are prone to cavities that often cannot be treated with standard fillings, necessitating their removal.
Cause crowding of nearby teeth: When there isn’t sufficient space for wisdom teeth to grow in properly, they can press against adjacent teeth, leading to crowding or potential damage.

What are the problems people face when their wisdom teeth is impacted?
Sometimes, you may need to get your wisdom tooth extracted. This can be the case when:
-
- You experience pain or discomfort in your mouth
- Food or debris becomes trapped in the area behind your wisdom teeth
- You develop gum disease or an infection around the wisdom tooth
- There is tooth decay in a wisdom tooth that has only partially erupted
- A nearby tooth or surrounding bone is affected by the impacted wisdom tooth
- A cyst, which is a fluid-filled sac, forms around the wisdom tooth
- Complications arise involving the wisdom teeth during orthodontic treatment

What is wisdom teeth extraction?
At K Family Dental, wisdom tooth extractions are outpatient procedures performed by a dentist or oral surgeon. Extractions may be recommended based on an X-ray assessment revealing an impacted wisdom tooth or other identified dental concerns.
Not everyone develops wisdom teeth, but those who do may have one to four. During the procedure, the surgeon will remove the tooth, either whole or in pieces, by making an incision in the gums. Anesthesia options, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or IV sedation, are determined in consultation with your dentist or oral surgeon, depending on the procedure’s complexity and clinical requirements.
Removing your wisdom tooth early
When the wisdom tooth is removed early, that is, before the age of twenty, the extraction procedure is typically easier. While age is not a strict factor for wisdom tooth extraction, delaying the procedure might increase the risk of complications.
In younger individuals, the roots of the wisdom teeth are not fully developed, which often makes the extraction process less complex and allows for faster healing. As a person ages, the roots may grow longer and become more curved, potentially making the extraction more challenging.
