Understanding Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth are the last permanent teeth to develop. The number and position of wisdom teeth vary between individuals, and some people may not develop them at all.
A wisdom tooth may be considered for removal if it is causing pain, infection, damage to a nearby tooth or another clinically identified problem. Not all impacted or unerupted wisdom teeth require extraction.
A dentist can assess your symptoms, wisdom teeth and relevant dental imaging to determine whether monitoring, treatment or extraction may be appropriate. If extraction is recommended, the dentist will explain the reason, available alternatives, relevant risks, recovery and costs before treatment.
When Wisdom Tooth Extraction May Be Recommended
A dentist may recommend wisdom tooth extraction when a tooth is causing, or is likely to cause, a clinically identified problem. This may include repeated infection, tooth decay, damage to a nearby tooth, a cyst, difficulty cleaning the area or another dental concern.
The dentist will assess your symptoms, oral health and relevant dental imaging before recommending monitoring, treatment or extraction. Not all impacted or unerupted wisdom teeth require removal.
If extraction is recommended, the procedure may involve removing the tooth in one piece or in sections, depending on its position and complexity. Anaesthesia or sedation options will be discussed based on the procedure, the patientโs health and individual clinical needs.
Treatment timing should be determined individually. Age, root development, tooth position, symptoms and the risk of future complications may all be considered. The dentist will explain the reason for treatment, available alternatives, potential risks, expected recovery and costs before proceeding.
