What is invisalign?
Invisalign is a clear aligner brand that’s been in the market since 1998. Unlike conventional braces, Invisalign is barely visible and the treatment involves the use of a clear plastic tray, which gradually shifts your teeth to your desired position. The treatment also involves periodic replacement of the clear plastic tray (typically every 1 – 2 weeks).

- Open bite
- Overcrowding of teeth
- Tooth gaps
- Mild underbites, crossbites, and/or overbites
- Mild teeth protrusion
- Mildly crooked or rotated teeth

How does the invisalign treatment process work?
The Invisalign treatment process consists of the 4 following steps:
Consultation: The first step involves consulting an orthodontist who has the license to provide Invisalign treatment. During the consultation, your teeth will be assessed by the dentists has special interest and further training in orthodontic treatments and you will also be asked about the results you desire. Next, pictures of your teeth will be taken, and X-rays will be performed as well. Signs of tooth decay and/or gum disease may also be examined by the dentists. After a thorough assessment of your dental health, the dentist will let you know whether you are a good candidate for the Invisalign treatment.
Mold taking: During your follow-up appointment, the dentists will use a digital scanner to scan your mouth. The scanning process involves the dentist using a wand to go over the teeth. This is a painless process and is quite quick as well. This process eliminates the need for taking a plastic mold. After the scan is completed, your mouth’s 3D image will be uploaded to a screen. Following this, the dentist will simulate the effects of the Invisalign treatment so you have a rough idea of how your mouth will appear following the treatment. After you leave, a treatment plan will be designed by the dentists, which will be forwarded to the Invisalign lab. The Invisalign lab will create the aligner trays based on the forwarded treatment plan. Once the trays have been made, they will be sent to your dentist.
First tray fitting: K Family Dental will reach out to you once your trays have been received. The fitting of the first tray will begin when you visit the K Family Dental offices again. The dentist will use buttons (small dental attachments) for holding your aligners properly in place and assisting with the movement of your teeth. Composite may be necessary for fitting the Invisalign template over your teeth. After thetemplate has been properly fit into place, the dentist will remove it. Following the removal of the template, button-like attachments will be left attached to the teeth. These attachments allow the aligners to position the teeth properly. This is a painless process, and once it is completed, you’ll get your first aligner tray.
New trays and follow-up appointments: K Family Dental will schedule follow-up appointments (typically 4 – 6 weeks) to assess your progress and whether the aligner tray is properly fitting. Every 1 – 2 weeks, your aligner tray will be replaced by a new one. The frequency of aligner tray replacement depends on your Invisalign treatment length and the movement of your teeth.
Length of invisalign treatment
Invisalign’s official website states that the average treatment time ranges from 12 – 18 months. However, the length of the treatment will ultimately boil down to factors such as the dental issues that you’re trying to address through the treatment, your age, and whether you’re following the dentist’s instructions.
K Family Dental recommends patients to wear the Invisalign aligners for as long as possible each day. Ideally, you should only remove them when you eat or drink. It’s important that you heed the instructions of K Family Dentists properly. Not following the instructions can increase the length of the treatment.
If you get your Invisalign aligner tray replaced every 1 – 2 weeks during a treatment that lasts for 15 months, you’ll need 33 – 65 aligner trays. The number will differ based on the treatment length and how often your dentist recommends you to get the aligner trays replaced.
